French Lawmakers Back Per-Gigabyte Internet Traffic Tax Despite Government Opposition - CircleID — France introduces 5.5-cent internet tax

France's lower house approved a 5.5-cent-per-gigabyte tax on content providers, including major streaming services and tech giants. The tax, which was passed despite initial resistance from the government, could increase the cost of downloading large files. For example, a 210GB download, such as GTA VI, would cost an additional €11.55. The vote was 11-10. The tax is expected to generate €10 billion annually, which potentially support various government initiatives.
